das arsenal in 1030 wien ist ein gebäudekomplex aus mehreren backsteinbauten der früher für militärische zwecke genutzt wurde. bei der im italienisch-mittelalterlich bzw. byzantinisch-maurisch errichteten baugruppe handel es sich um das bedeutendste profane ensemble des romantischen historismus. insgesamt 31 objekte wurden auf grund der märzrevolution ab 1849 errichtet, wobei die alte stadtmauer durch ein festungsdreieck bestehend aus dem arsenal, der rossauer kaserne und der nicht mehr existenten franz-joseph-kaserne ersetzt wurde. der großteil der anlage besteht noch heute in seiner ursprünglichen form, nur die nutzung der gebäude ist eine andere. neben einem wohnhaus und objekten die von der tu wien genutzt werden, befindet sich das heeresgeschichtliche museum in einem freistehenden und repräsentativen trakt. ein großes banner mit dem spruch „kriege gehören in museen“, dem ich nur zustimmen kann, ziert den bereich neben dem eingang.
the arsenal in the 3rd district of vienna is a complex of buildings that are made of bricks and were used for a military aim in former times. furthermore the device was designed in an italian-medieval style and is the most important profane ensemble of the romantic historism. the 31 objects were built because of the revolution after 1849. moreover the old city wall of vienna was replaced by a complex of 3 buildings, the arsenal, the rossauer casern and the franz-joseph casern, that doesn’t exist anymore. the bigger part still is like it used to be in the beginning, only the use is different now. in addition to the residential building and some objects that are used by the tu vienna, there is the museum of the historical army in a free-standing and prestigious example of architecture. next to the entrance you can find a sign with the saying “wars should be in museums”, which i support.
