die festung wurde von 1850 bis 1875 unter der herrschaft von isabella II errichtet. auf grund der angst der spanier vor der rückeroberung der insel durch die briten oder franzosen und dem vorangegangenen abriss der festung st felip wurde der bau von la mola beschlossen. errichtet wurde diese im deutschen befestigungssystem namens tenaillensystem, wobei der grundriss der neuen festung unregelmässig ist, da die alten fundamente der burg sant felip die im bastionärsystem ausgeführt war wiederverwendet wurden. zwischen 1939 und 1975, während der spanischen diktatur, wurde la mola als gefangenenlager für widerstandskämpfer missbraucht. heute ist die anlage für die öffentlichkeit zugänglich und kann besichtigt werden.
the fort has been built between 1850 and 1875, during the command of isabella II. the construction of la mola was decided on the fear of the spanish before the conquest of the island by the british or french and placed on the demolished fortress of sant felip. it was planed in the german fortification system, the ground plan of the new fortress is irregular because the old foundations of the burgant felip, which had been executed in the bastionary system, were reused. between 1939 and 1975, during the spanish dictatorship, la mola was abused as a prison camp for resistance fighters. today the fort is accessible to the public and can be visited.
