der kleine hinduistische tempel befindet sich zwischen echo- und bolong beach an der westküste balis. schätzungen zufolge gibt es auf der insel über 20 000 tempelanlagen, wobei nicht alle davon öffentlich zugänglich sind. dieses exemplar ist beispielsweise nicht auf den landkarten zu finden und dadurch sehr rar besucht. mindestens 3 tempel mit jeweils verschiedenen aufgaben befinden sich in jedem dorf. sie werden pura puseh, pura desa (tempel der ratsversammlung) und pura dalem (todestempel) genannt. trotz der unterschiedlichen bedeutungen sind die balinesischen tempelanlagen sehr ähnlich. sie sind immer zum heiligen berg gunung agung hin gerichtet, in verschiedene höfe gegliedert und nur von mauern umgeben um den göttern offene räume zu präsentieren. die meisten anlagen werden durch ein gespaltenes tor, das so genannte candi bentar, betreten. die form des einganges, der immer richtung meer zeigt, geht auf eine legende zurück. laut dieser viel der berg mahameru, der sitz aller hinduistischen götter, in zwei teile als er nach bali transportiert wurde. daraus entstanden die berge gunung agung und batur.

the small hindu temple is located between echo- and bolong beach at the west coast of bali. approximately there are over 20 000 temple complexes on the island. not all of them are opened for the public. this example is not even marked on the map, that’s why it’s empty when you visit it. in every village there are at least 3 temples, the pura puseh, the pura desa (council temples) and the pura dalem (death temple). even though they have different meanings the composition of the complexes is allways simular. the constructions are arranged towards the holy mountain named gunung agung, divided into several courts and surrounded by walls to stay open to the sky and the gods. most of them are entered through a split doorway, the so called candi bentar. this special shape of the entrance is based on a legend which says that the holy mountain mahameru fell appart into two pieces when it was transported to bali. the outcome of this are the mountains gunung agung and batur.
