pont suspendu – gustav eiffel
die pont suspendu wurde vom architekturbüro von gustav eiffel entworfen und 1894 fertiggestellt. mit einer spannweite von 110 metern war sie zum zeitpunkt ihrer entstehung die längste hängebrücke der welt. sowohl die filigrane metallkonstruktion, der brückenkopf aus naturstein als auch der brückenbelag aus holzdielen fügen sich in die umgebende landschaft ein. seit der erbauung der direkt daneben verlaufenden autobrücke im jahr 1979 wurde die ponte suspendu nur noch als fußgängerbrücke genutzt. auf grund der verrosteten konstruktion und der nicht mehr allzu vertrauens erweckenden dielen ist seit diesem jahr auch die überquerung für fussgänger verboten. hoffentlich wird die hängebrücke demnächst renoviert werden um ihren erhalt zu gewährleisten. südlich von sainte-rose befindet sich der aktive vulkan piton de la fournaise, dessen ausbrüche durch bei den lavastrassen, die vom gipfel bis ins meer führen, angebrachte schilder mit den jeweiligen jahreszahlen der eruption gekennzeichnet wurden. die lavafelder wirken wie mondlandschaften die nicht von dieser welt stammen. im kontrast zum schwarzen gestein steht die urwaldartige begrünung der insel la reunion.
the pont suspendu was designed by the architectural office of gustav eiffel and finished in the year 1894. at the time of the completion the bridge, which has a length of 110 meters, used to be the longest rope bridge in the world. furthermore the filigree metal construction, the bridge heads that are made out of natural stone and the wooden flooring integrate themselves, perfectly to the surrounding area. since 1979 the pont suspendu was only used as a pedestrian bridge because a new one for cars has been built directly next to the old one. because of the rusted construction and the partly brocken flooring the pont suspendu has been closed for pedestrians as well during this year. hopefully it‘s going to be renovated so that it can be used again. in the south of sainte-rose you can find the active volcano piton de la fournaise. in addition the lava fields, which lead from the top of the mountain to the sea, from the eruptions are marked with signs that have the date of the eruption on them. the lava fields seem like moonscapes that are not of this world. in contrast to the black volcanic rock you can find a green jungle all over the island of la reunion.
