die im jahr 1828 gegründeten eisenwerke in vitkovice bestehen aus den hochöfen, der kohlegrube hlubina und der kokerei. innerhalb von diesem komplex fand sowohl die kohleförderung, kohleaufbereitung, kokserzeugung als auch die erzeugung von roheisen statt. die kombination dieser komplexen prozesse an einem ort ist einzigartig in europa. 1998 wurde die anlage endgültig geschlossen, nachdem innerhalb von 162 jahren 90 millionen tonnen roheisen und 42 millionen koks erzeugt wurden. seit 2007 findet eine umnutzung der gebäude des areals statt. so wurde das gasometer der anlage in die mehrzweckhalle gong umfunktioniert und die ehemalige energiezentrale verwandelte sich in die kleine welt der technik. ausserdem wurde mit dem bolt tower der sich an der stelle des hochofens nr.1 befindet ein zubau in 80 meteren höhe getätigt. der entwurf von josef pleskot beruht auf einem zylinder der in die bestehende konstruktion des turmes eingefügt wurde und von einer auskragenden rampe umkreist wird. diese führt auf das dach des cafes, wobei die plattform an der spitze einen atemberaubenden ausblick auf die fabrik und die stadt ostrava bietet. eine derartige anlage von oben sehen zu können bietet eine enorme bereicherung für den komplex. die bauwerke auf diese art und weise zu nutzen und zu erweitern ist ein hervorragender ansatz um mit bestand umzugehen. die größe der elemente und die reine funktionalität jedes einzelnen rohres macht diese architektur spannend.
the ironworks in vitkovice were founded in the year 1828 and consist of the furnaces, the coal mine hlubina and the coking plant. As well the coal production, coal preparation, coke production and the production of the raw iron took place inside of this complex. furthermore the combination of all this processes at one place is unique in europe. after producing 90 million tons of raw iron and 42 million tons of coke within 162 years the factory was closed in the year 1998. since 2007 several buildings are used in a new way. for example the gasometer is used as a multi-purpose hall and the former power station contains a museum about technique. besides the so called bolt tower is a annex to the furnace nr.1 and is placed in the hight of 80 m. the design of josef pleskot is based on a cylinder that is integrated in the consisting construction and orbited by a ramp that leads to the top of the cafe. from the upper platform it’s possible to get a great view of the fabrik and the city of ostrava. To be able to have a look at a industrial complex like this from above is such a great thing. furthermore it’s a good handling of the existance to use the buildings in a new way and extend the constructiones. the size of the elements and the fact that every pipe has a function makes this type of architecture that interesting to me.
